How to Explain What You Do in One Clear Sentence
Explain what you do in one unrehearsed sentence. Ask your whole team to try it, compare the answers, and fix the message before your market misreads it.
You're at an industry dinner. Someone you've just met turns to you and asks the question every founder fields a thousand times: "So — what do you do?"
You have roughly seven seconds of genuine attention before their eyes start scanning the room. What comes out of your mouth?
If your honest answer is a winding paragraph, a stack of buzzwords, or something so generic it could describe a hundred competitors, you have a positioning problem. But the uncomfortable truth is that the problem rarely stops with you. Run the same test on your team. Ask everyone who represents your brand — employees, partners, practitioners — to explain what you do in a single unrehearsed sentence. Then put the answers side by side.
They will not match. One person leads with the service category. Another recites the methodology. A third describes whatever project they happen to be staffed on. Someone eventually admits, "Honestly, it's hard to explain."
Harry Beckwith diagnosed this decades ago in Selling the Invisible: communicate one thing memorably, because multiple messages communicate nothing. He staged the test at a cocktail party — noisy room, stranger, one sentence — and it remains the cheapest positioning audit available. A firm that can't produce one clear, specific, repeatable answer hasn't finished positioning itself. A firm where every representative produces a different answer is un-positioning itself, one conversation at a time. And the cost lands where it hurts most: your pricing power.
Explain What You Do: One Impression Is All You Get
Memory Will Choose for You If You Don't
The cognitive science here is blunt. From a single conversation, people reliably retain one thing. With some luck, two. With deliberate effort, maybe three. Past that, retention falls off a cliff. The stranger at the event, the buyer at the conference, the contact who might refer you next quarter — each of them walks away holding exactly one impression of your firm.
Here's the part most founders miss: you don't control how much they remember. You only control what the one remembered thing is. Decline to choose it deliberately, and their brain assigns you the most generic label available — "some kind of consulting firm."
That label is where differentiation goes to die. Months later, when that same contact thinks, "We need help with our organizational strategy," no name surfaces from the generic bucket. The firm that gets the call is the one that planted something concrete enough to survive in memory.
How to Explain What You Do in One Sentence
Three Filters Your Answer Has to Pass
Be precise about what this sentence is. It's not a tagline, and it's not the mission statement on your website. It's the literal words you use to explain what you do to a real person who asked a casual question and is half-listening while holding a drink.
Run every candidate through three filters:
1. Lead with the outcome, not the mechanism. In a casual conversation, nobody wants the tour of your process. "We run a 30-question diagnostic across six dimensions" describes machinery. "We show companies their blind spots in 90 minutes — and what they find is usually worth seven figures" describes a result the listener can feel. Save the mechanism for the second meeting.
2. Make it repeatable by a stranger. Your sentence has to survive being passed along. Tell it to someone outside your industry, then ask them to say it back an hour later. If they mangle it, the sentence is carrying too much. Cut until a non-expert can carry it intact — because referrals travel through exactly this channel: second-hand, from memory, without you in the room.
3. Be specific enough to provoke a follow-up question. "I'm a consultant" ends conversations. "We measure how ready organizations are for AI and tell them precisely what to fix next" starts them. Vague claims earn polite nods. Concrete claims earn "wait — how do you measure that?", which is the entire point.
Compare weak and strong versions across a few service domains:
- Weak: "We're a management consultancy focused on operational excellence." Strong: "We score how well manufacturers actually run, and the gap between their number and the industry benchmark is usually worth millions."
- Weak: "We offer leadership development programs." Strong: "We assess leaders against 34 competencies, then name the three behaviors capping their entire team's performance."
- Weak: "We support companies through digital transformation." Strong: "We give organizations a technology maturity score — and most discover their budget is pointed at the wrong problems."
Look at what every strong version shares: a measurement, a named audience, and an implied gap the listener instantly maps onto their own situation. None of them sell anything. Each one simply makes the next question irresistible.
Claim a Phrase, Then Refuse to Let Go
Verbal Territory and the Autocomplete Test
Verne Harnish pushes the principle one level deeper with "Words You Own" — the idea that a brand should claim a specific patch of mental territory in its market. Volvo owns "safety." FedEx owns "overnight." When a buyer thinks about your category, the words you've claimed should surface your name automatically.
For an expertise business, that means picking one phrase — narrow enough that you can actually own it, broad enough that owning it matters — and binding it to your brand through sheer repetition. Not "consulting." Not "strategy." A phrase with edges.
Harnish offers a ruthless validity check: type your target phrase into Google and watch the autocomplete. If competitors' names appear alongside it, the territory is contested — keep searching until you find ground where you can be first. Once you have it, deploy the phrase everywhere: every article, every keynote, every sales conversation, the name of your diagnostic, the title of your methodology. Saturation is the strategy.
One Voice or No Brand
Fragmented Messaging Quietly Destroys Pricing Power
Now back to that opening experiment, because this is where most firms lose the game. The way you explain what you do isn't the founder's property. It belongs to every employee, every partner, every practitioner who carries the brand into a room. If fifty practitioners describe the methodology fifty different ways, the market doesn't hear one firm with fifty voices — it hears fifty unrelated firms.
Watch the chain reaction. A prospect hears version one from Practitioner A and version two from Practitioner B. They don't conclude the team is wonderfully diverse; they conclude the firm is confused about its own offer. Confusion corrodes trust. Corroded trust corrodes the willingness to pay a premium. And once pricing power goes, the economics of the entire model follow it down.
The fix is unglamorous: a messaging document. One master reference holding the sentence, the taglines, the value propositions by segment, the differentiation claims, the objection-handling language, and the proof points. Everyone who represents the brand receives it. Every new practitioner is trained on it. And someone audits, on a regular cadence, whether what people actually say still matches the page.
Founders resist this because repetition feels like creative death. It isn't. Repetition is branding. By the time the sentence bores you, the market is barely beginning to register it. The fiftieth telling may feel stale in your mouth — but it's the first hearing for someone in the room, and for everyone else it's another pass over the neural groove that makes your firm the automatic answer when a relevant need appears.
One sentence. The same words, from every mouth, in every channel. That's the bedrock under premium pricing. Your website, your content, your conference talks, your certifications — all of it is amplification. Amplify a muddy message and you broadcast confusion at scale. Amplify a clear one and the market starts repeating it for you.
